China, Russia Sign Media Agreement to Challenge “Dominance of Western Media”

China and Russia are teaming up "to challenge the dominance of Western media,” China’s People Daily reported.

The two nations met this week to sign a media cooperation agreement at the China-Russia media forum in Moscow on July 4.

At the third meeting of the Forum, Lu Xinning – the deputy editor-in-chief of the People’s Daily – urged the Chinese and Russian media to work together to counter "Western discourse’s dominance.”

"As two big powers, strategic collaboration between our two countries is related to global stability. This same logic applies to discourse, which can have a global impact,” she had stated.

She also noted that in recent years, the Western discourse against China and Russia has pushed for a "war of all against all” view of the two nations, and in turn, created a distorted view of the two world powers.

Chinese and Russian media cannot let others interpret the international order their behalf, Lu added.

"This new media era has redefined the way in which information is disseminated and acquired, creating a rare opportunity for developing countries and emerging market countries to win the right to speak,” she pressed.

The agreement was signed between People’s Daily President Yang Zhenwu and director general of Russia’s TASS news agency Sergey Mikhaylov, and is set to "allow both sides to form a comprehensive strategic partnership under the principles of equality and mutual trust.”

China and Russia also signed eighteen other agreements at the Forum.
