TABNAK, Sep, 16: “The recent trip of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Iraq was an important issue in ties between Iran and Iraqi Kurdistan region,” he said in an interview with TABNAK News Agency.
The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, arrived in Baghdad last Wednesday on a multi-day visit and was welcomed by the country's Prime Minister, Mohammad Shia al-Sudani.
The high-ranking officials of Iran and Iraq signed 14 cooperation documents in the economic, cultural, educational, social, artistic, media, technical-engineering, commercial, transportation, political, sports, agricultural and pilgrimage fields in the presence of the heads of state of the two countries.
Pezeshkian stepped in the City of Erbil on Thursday for meetings with the heads of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. He was welcomed by President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Nechirvan Barzani, and then met and talked with Masoud Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party.
“This was the first visit of a president from Iran to the Kurdistan Region, and this also made his presence in the Kurdistan Region very important. The visit of Mr. Dr. Pezeshkian to the Kurdistan Region marked a great event in the field of relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kurdistan Region,” he said in the interview.
“The visit of President Pezeshkian to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah on the one hand showed that there are friendly relations between Tehran and the Kurdistan Region, and on the other hand, it demonstrated that these relations are of special political importance for both sides. I must also point out that the relations between Iran and the Kurdistan Region are progressing within the framework of the Iraqi constitution and within the framework of the agreements reached between the two sides, “ he continued.
He further referred to agreements made between Iran and Iraqi Kurdistan region, saying, “The Kurdistan Region has always adhered to its agreements with Tehran, as well as the provisions of Baghdad's agreements with Tehran.”
Iran and the Kurdistan Region have previously signed joint agreements with each other, including the 2021 agreement. During Pezeshkian’s recent trip to the Kurdistan Region, the two sides emphasized the full implementation of the deal.
