Amir-Sa’eed Iravani, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, says any act of aggression would result in severe consequences, for which the U.S. would be fully accountable.
In a letter to the U.N. Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council on Monday, Iravani condemned reckless and provocative statements from U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump.
Iran’s diplomat expressed his country’s deep concerns over the recent hostile remarks by senior U.S. government officials, terming the statements as a violation of fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, which prohibit the threat or use of force against sovereign nations.
The ambassador reiterated Iran’s commitment to maintaining international peace and security, adding that the country is firmly resolved to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests against any hostile measures.
The United States has been trying to illegally justify its aggressive actions and war crimes against Yemen, he said, adding that Washington has openly threatened to use force against the Islamic Republic of Iran while "leveling baseless accusations" against Tehran.
The envoy called on the Security Council to take serious note of inflammatory statements and demand the United States comply with its obligations under the UN Charter.
