Iran’s president offers congratulations to new Hezbollah Leader Naim Qassem

TABNAK, Oct, 30: "Undoubtedly, in this sensitive historical situation, defending Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the lofty ideals of the resistance front and the oppressed Palestinian nation, are of historical importance. I am confident that the presence of a bright figure with clear records like your excellency at the leader of the Hezbollah group will strengthen the will in the field of resistance and also the continuation of the bright path of the high-ranking martyrs of this front," Pezeshkian wrote in a message.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement announced on Tuesday it has chosen Sheikh Naim Qassem to succeed Martyr Hassan Nasrallah as the new secretary general of the group.

Hezbollah's Shura Council announced on Tuesday that it had elected Sheikh Naim Qassem as secretary-general to succeed Martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, according to the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen news network.

This decision "grounded in the principles of true Islam and the steadfast ideals of Hezbollah, follows the party’s established procedures for selecting the Secretary-General", it noted.

The 60-year-old cleric is a veteran figure in Hezbollah, having served as deputy secretary general of the Lebanese resistance group since 1991.

He was appointed deputy secretary general under Hezbollah’s late secretary general, Abbas al-Musawi, who was assassinated by an Israeli helicopter attack in 1992, and remained in the role when Nasrallah became leader.

Sheikh Qassem has long been one of the leading spokesmen for Hezbollah, conducting many interviews with foreign media.
