The San Diego Police Department received multiple calls just after 6 p.m. of an active shooter in the 9000 block of Judicial Drive. The shooting was determined to be at the La Jolla Crossroads apartments.
The shooter, described as a white male armed with a gun, was in the pool area of the apartment complex at the La Jolla Crossroads apartments when San Diego police arrived at the scene, police chief Shelley Zimmerman told the press on Sunday.
Three officers opened on the suspect when he pointed his weapon at them Ms Zimmerman before adding that the suspect has been confirmed to be dead.
Eight people were shot during the incident and several were in critical condition as of Sunday night, police said.
An eyewitness told FOX 5 that he saw the suspect "sitting, drinking a beer in one hand with a gun out in the other" in the pool area of the apartment complex. "The suspect looked pretty relaxed, pretty relaxed" the witness, who did not identify himself, told FOX 5.
Police said they do not have any information on the shooter and his motive at this stage.
