The Russian Navy and strategic bombers destroyed today with Kalibr winged missiles targets of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in the Syrian region of Abu-Kamalia, said today Defense Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov.

Konashenkov said that the intelligence service discovered a large group of IS members, an important command post and a large amount of stored weapons, all in a fortified area.

At least six TU-22M3 strategic bombers participated in the operation, along with Russian army's submarines that launched six Kalibr missiles underwater against the aforementioned positions, he said.

Konashenkov said that in the operation bombers SU-24 and the updated SU-34 were also used, departing from the Russian air base in Jmeimim, province of Latakia, Syria, as well as SU-30SM, SU-35 and MIG-29 bombers.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that 95 percent of Syrian territory was cleared of terrorist groups such as IS, which made Abu-Kamalia one of the last important points controlled by extremists.

However, the Russian military command denounced yesterday that in areas controlled by U.S. troops in southern Syria, armed groups are being trained in refugee camps and are described by the West as an armed Syrian opposition.

The Russian military command said that some people that managed to escape from the aforementioned camps said that U.S. advisers create brigades to fight the Government forces, while commanders of those armed groups are paid by the U.S. advisers.
