“Expanding interactions with the Republic of Azerbaijan is of great significance and position in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy and I am sure that the bilateral ties will be expanded further in future in line with interests of the two sides,” Sadeq in a meeting with Azeri Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev here in Tehran.
Tehran and Baku have mutual projects underway in transit, logistic and infrastructure sectors.
Iran has started building Rasht-Astara railroad spanning 162 kilometers and is regarded as a turning point in expanding North-South Corridor.
Sadegh also called for preparing a roadmap to increase the volume of mutual transit between the two sides to 15 million tons annually.
Earlier in December 2023 Mustafayev had said rail transport between Iran and Azerbaijan has increased by 47 percent in 2023.
Mustafayev, who is the head of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Committee, made the remarks in a phone conversation with former Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash.
According to Mustafayev, over 700,000 tons of goods have been transported between the two countries through railway in 2023, which is a record high.
The official also noted that transit between the two countries has also increased by 57 percent in the current year.
Citrus fruits, various kinds of fruits, cement, chemicals, tiles, and major food products were among the main products exported from Iran into the Republic of Azerbaijan via rail.
