وقایع اتفاقیه؛
پس از آنکه گروهی با هدایت محمد موسوی خوئینی‌ها در سیزده آبان 1358 به سفارت آمریکا در تهران واقع در تقاطع خیابان مفتح و خیابان طالقانی حمله کردند، 66 نفر از کارمندان سفارت آمریکا گروگان گرفته شدند. سی آی ای مدتی بعد سفارت آمریکا در تهران را به ایستگاه اطلاعاتی تبدیل شد و شش دیپلماتی که در زمان حمله به سفارت آمریکا در آنجا نبودند و توانسته بودند در تهران پنهان شوند را با پاسپورت کانادایی از ایران خارج کردند. در همان زمان آمریکا به موازات رایزنی دیپلماتیک برای پایان گروگان گیری، عملیات نظام پنجه عقاب را پایه ریزی کرد که با برخورد یک هلی کوپتر و یک هواپیمای نیروی هوایی آمریکا در صحرای طبس و بر هم خوردن برنامه دقیق این عملیات، طرح انتقال نظامیان آمریکایی به ورزشگاه شیرودی و سپس حمله به سفارت آمریکا و انتقال کارمندان سفارت از طریق هلی کوپتر به صحرای طبس و سپس انتقال به خارج ایران شکست خورد. ایران به نشانه حسن نیت در 19 تا 20 نوامبر 1979 سیزده گروگان سیاه پوست و زن و در یازده ژوئیه 1980 یک گروگان به دلیل بیماری آزاد شد. در ادامه 52 گروگان باقی ماندند که تا زمان خروج از ایران مجموعاً 444 روز در ایران زندانی بودند. در نهایت پس از آنکه در تاریخ 30 دی 1359 برابر با 20 ژانویه 1981 با پذیرش قرارداد الجزایر از سوی دولت‌های ایران و ایالات متحده آمریکا پایان یافت. در همین راستا ابتدا گروگان‌ها با هواپیمای الجزایر از ایران خارج شدند و در ادامه به آلمان منتقل شدند و سپس از الجزایر به آلمان منتقل شدند و در یک بیمارستان چک آپ پزشکی شدند. در ادامه این شوی تبلیغاتی، از آنها ابتدا در نیویورک استقبال شد. سپس با هواپیمای نیروی هوایی آمریکایی به واشنگتن منتقل شدند و در خیابان اصلی روبروی کاخ سفید مورد استقبال گسترده قرار گرفتند! در دسامبر 2015 اعلام شد که پس از 35 سال کنگره ایالات متحده قانونی را تصویب کرد که از محل جریمه بانک فرانسوی پاریباس که به علت نقض تحریم‌های ایران، سودان و لیبی حدود 9 میلیارد دلار جریمه شده بود به هریک از 53 دیپلماتی که 444 روز در تهران گروگان گرفته شده بودند حدود چهار میلیون و چهارصد هزار دلار غرامت پرداخت شود که معادل حدوداً روزی ده هزار دلار است.
