Early turnout in the second round of France’s parliamentary elections was lower than in previous years, the French Interior Ministry said Sunday morning.

Participation in the main metropolitan areas stood at 17.75 percent as of midday Sunday, down from 21.41 percent in 2012 and 22.89 percent in 2007, the ministry said.

That’s also much lower than the midday turnout in the first round of parliamentary elections on June 11, which was at 19.24 percent, according to FranceInfo. Abstention hit a record 51.29 percent in the first round, and is forecast to be 53 percent on Sunday, it said.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist La République En Marche party and its junior partner, Modem, are expected to win an overwhelming majority in the 577-member lower house of parliament, claiming up to 460 seats, according to projections based on the first round of results.

The polls close at 8 p.m.
