Iran’s sorbitol plant, only one in West Asia resumes operation

A sorbitol plant, the only one in Iran and West Asia, producing 7,500 tons of 70% sorbitol in liquid form annually is resuming its activities after a 26-year pause.

TABNAK, Jan 07: The company began was launched in 1995, but it stopped its activities shortly after that and was closed for 26 years.

 

The official relaunching ceremony of this factory will be held on January 14.

 

Sorbitol is a type of sugar alcohol that is found naturally in certain fruits and vegetables. It is also produced synthetically and used as a sweetener and solution used in food and pharmaceutical products.

 

Due to its sweetness similarity to sugar and its ability to be dissolved in water, sorbitol is used in pastry products, chewing gum, chocolate, sugar-free drinks, medicines and cosmetic products.

 

The initial sorbitol line was launched in Iran over 4 decades ago using Italian technology with Italian experts were present in the launching ceremony.

 

Over time, many employees of the factory received the necessary training in Italy, until finally in 1995, the sorbitol factory was launched officially and completely. The factory was active for two and a half years.  However, after departure of Italian experts from Iran due to excessive imports, the production line was closed in 1998.
