U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is a "dead woman walking” and could be gone within days, according to the former Chancellor George Osborne.

Now editor of the Evening Standard newspaper, Osborne was blunt about May’s prospects following a calamitous election campaign that left her with no majority in the House of Commons and forced to seek a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to stay in power.

"Theresa May is a dead woman walking. It’s just how long she’s on death row. I think we will know very shortly, in that we could easily get to the middle of next week and it all collapses for her,” said Osborne.

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Program, he said there was anger in the Conservative Party that May had made no acknowledgement in her speech Friday morning after the election of the losses the party had suffered and the MPs it had lost.

Osborne was also dismissive of the idea that the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is maneuvering for the leadership. He said that as a newspaper editor he would not put it in his paper. "He’s in a permanent leadership campaign. I’m not sure it qualifies as news.”

May demoted Osborne to the backbenches after she took over from Prime Minister David Cameron last summer, in the wake of the Brexit referendum. Osborne resigned from Parliament earlier this year.
