TABNAK, Oct, 05: They presented an efficient and environment friendly method to increase the efficiency of converting methane to hydrogen using laser induced plasma.
Fatemeh Ahmadi-Nouri, a PhD student and the project manager, said the study has used the Spark Discharge Method with Laser Induction Plasma (SD-LIP), adding the rising demands for energy leads to global warming, climate changes and high production of greenhouse gases.
This problem has caused an urgent need to convert greenhouse gases, especially methane gas and carbon dioxide, into valuable products, she noted.
Methane is responsible for global warming 86 times more than carbon dioxide in a 20-year period, and it is the most common substance found in the composition of natural gas.
Methane combustion also leads to the release of a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore, finding an efficient way to convert methane into valuable compounds that end up reducing greenhouse gases has attracted the attention of scientists.
