President Vladimir Putin said Monday that Russia will not accept "provocation and speculation" around the latest suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria.
According to a Kremlin statement.Putin made the remarks during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, reported China's Xinhua news agency.
"The two leaders discussed the situation in Syria, including the chemical attack allegations made by several western states against the Syrian government. It is unacceptable to use it as an opportunity for provocation and speculation," the statement read.
On Saturday, activists claimed Syrian forces used chlorine gas in an attack on Douma, the last rebel held area in eastern Ghouta., killing at least 40 people.
The allegations were strongly denied by the Syrian government.
